I think using rice cooker to cook spaghetti is among the favor rice cooker trick that use by college students. I show it to my college mate once, wow that is long time ago:P
Anyway, here is how you can do it:
First prepare the ingredients:
- 1 pound spaghetti
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1 jar of spaghetti sauce (1 pound 10 ounce)
This recipe is like cooking spaghetti using boil bowl but the different is you can use rice cooker to do that. First put in your spaghetti into your rice cooker, you can break it into half to make it fit. Add some water and the pasta sauce together. Turn on the rice cooker, stir it frequently and stir it until it’s shuts down or turn to “warm”.
Now you are ready to serve:) But check the pasta and make sure it’s cooked, if not, put it some water, turn on the rice cooker and stir it again until it’s turn to “warm” again.
This is one of the easiest way to cook spaghetti using rice cooker, especially when you might only have one rice cooker in your college room as your cooking tool:)

What’s the point of getting a brand new rice cooker only to have warm cooked rice at your disposal? Let me take the liberty of teaching you guys how to whip up a very simple dish which mainly involves rice.
One of the most basic rice dishes/cooking methods, and yet, it has endless possibilities and variations. I’m talking about Fired rice. This is one of my dishes when I first started out as a (very) junior chef, so i guarantee that it wouldn’t be a problem to prepare this dish!
Firstly, prepare enough rice that roughly equates to 4 cups (of rice). 4 cups, as in 4 cups of cooked rice, and not 4 cups of raw grains! You might end up with a lot of rice if so you decide to cook 4 cups of raw rice. Other ingredients you need to prepare are:
- 1 – 2 green onions, or shallots (as desired) – you can put in bulbs of garlic instead
- 2 large eggs (3 if you plan to add other ingredients such as minced meat)
- Cup of mixed vegetables – or any diced vegetables of your choice
- 1 teaspoon salt (to taste)
- Pepper (to taste)
- 4 tablespoons oil for stir-frying, (or as needed)
- 4 cups cooked rice
- 1 – 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce or oyster sauce, (as desired)
Seems like a simple, easy to get list of ingredients, no?
Step By Step Instructions!
- Firstly, peel, wash and finely chop the onions. Not too fine though. We still want to taste the onions. Then, crack the eggs into a bowl, and lightly beat them with salt and pepper. As you know, eggs themselves lack a strong flavor. The salt and pepper will help give the eggs that tasty kick!
- Heat up the wok (or frying pan if you don’t have one), and put in 2 tablespoons of oil. Wait till the oil is hot before adding in the eggs. (you can use a chopstick to test if the oil is hot enough. If bubbles emerge when u dip the chopstick in, means the oil is ready) Cook the eggs while stirring them until they are scrambled but not too dry. Then, remove the eggs and clear out whatever’s left in the wok.
- After that, re-heat the wok, and add 2 tablespoons of oil. Wait for the oil to be ready before you add in the cooked rice. (Try to break up with rice with your hands first before putting it into the wok. This is to prevent clumps of rice in your fried rice). Stir in the soy sauce and/or oyster sauce as desired. More oyster sauce and soy sauce if you prefer powerful flavors, and less if you prefer tamer flavors.
- When the rice is heated enough, stir in the scrambled eggs. Mixed them thoroughly and toss them around. Stir in the green onions and serve!
This serves 4 – 5 people. Remember though, to cook this at high heat constantly or else the rice will end up being very dry!
